This newsletter was born in a restaurant. In the kitchen, in setting the table, in every cozy booth booked solid on a Friday night. And while it’s evolved and adapted over nearly two decades, the backbone of what we write about here is always gathered around GOOD TASTE. In food, in company, in wild, shareable experiences near and far — and the memorable environments we create when we merge all three.
That’s what On the House is: a weekly dispatch of very good taste — on our plates and in our lives. Each edition will deliver a menu of tips, resources, hidden gems, New York City nostalgia, and style, all from New Yorkers who know where to find the best stuff.
The Team
I’m John McDonald, and if you’ve been to any of my restaurants over the past 25 years, we’ve probably said hello — or you’ve spotted me across the room fussing with somebody’s table. I’ve grown up in restaurants/bars and Soho, and both are my homes: literally and creatively as a launchpad for all the cool stuff I love to dabble in and learn about. On the House is a digest of all those bits of great advice and ideas I’m endlessly collecting.
